The Norwegian Directorate of Health published in 2024 "When something goes wrong. A guide to caring for patients, users, families and employees in connection with adverse events". It was developed using an evidence-based and co-creative process with broad participation of stakeholders, including those with lived experience.

The guide describes what is important to consider, why this is so, based on the knowledge model, and in addition includes practical tools that show how the guidelines can be operationalized and put to use.

Seminar models have been developed, as well as other initiatives and supporting materials, for example short-version laminated cards, to promote distribution and implementation. Check out the boxes below for presentations and materials in English.

Guide for Adverse Events - caring for patiens, users, falilies and employees (summary in english)

In March 2026, our work was presented at the BMJ International Forum in Oslo. A parallell session focused on healthcare workers, and a poster on patients, users and families after adverse events.

To support implementation and meet the needs of busy health care workers and leaders, we have developed three laminated memory cards, and a two part seminar for emloyees, to prepare them for the occurrence of adverse events, and to build resilience and safe cultures.
